What Are Latex Paints?

The simple answer to this million-dollar question is latex paints are water-based paints that contain synthetic polymers. Modern latex paint utilizes acrylic polymers and polyvinyl acetate as binders. These paints are commonly used in both interior and exterior settings. Latex paints were originally introduced in the 1940’s, when they were invented by German chemist Otto Röhm whom also developed the German chemical company BASF.  However, the original binder was rubber. Over time, the rubber binders were replaced with more environmentally friendly ones.

Latex paints are revered for their easy application and cleanup. They also dry quickly, which is especially helpful with painting projects requiring multiple coats. Latex is also durable, versatile and low odor. And maybe best of all, it is super affordable.
